Whether on the court or off, Coach Ramsey, leads by example. Her commitment to excellence is shadowed only by her deep and abiding faith. Retired from a 35 year coaching career, 20 of which she served as head coach for the Ashland University Women’s Basketball Team, Sue is ready to share her expertise beyond the hardwood. She led the Ashland Eagles to a Division II national title in 2013, which followed on the heels of being 2012 national runner-up. That same year Coach Ramsey was named the 2012 Conference, Regional and NCAA Division 2 National Coach of the Year and inducted into Miami University’s prestigious Cradle of Coaches.
Coach Ramsey’s holistic approach to coaching has led to other honors including the induction into the Athletes in Action “Hall of Faith” in 2013. She has also been recognized by receiving the Carol Eckman Award (2012) for demonstrating outstanding values and character, as well as the Kay Yow Heart of a Coach Award (2011).
The latter award, recognizing the heart of a champion speaks directly to why Sue Ramsey is a well-respected coach, leader, mentor and woman of God. She knows how to build a climate of trust and respect regardless of context. She is also quick to share her success: “As I reflect on this incredible journey I am grateful to the Lord for His blessings and I am ever so thankful for are all the wonderful players and coaches I have encountered along the way.”
Now as Coach Ramsey enters the professional world beyond coaching, a commitment to excellence coupled with passion and tempered by humility serve as her focal points.
Ramsey is the architect of Ashland’s successful women’s basketball program. Her record on the AU bench is 367-217 (.628). She led the Eagles to the NCAA Division II national championship in 2013 and her team was the national runner-up in 2012. Ramsey led AU to the NCAA postseason five times. Her teams visited the GLIAC postseason 16 times. Ramsey was the NCAA Division II national coach of the year in 2011-12. She’s a member of the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. During her tenure she also served as the Senior Women Administrator and as an Assistant Athletic Director.
Every two years since 1984, Ashland County has recognized individuals and teams for their outstanding achievements and contributions. Coach Sue Ramsey is being inducted into the 2018 Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame. Over the past 20 years, she has established the Ashland University Women’s Basketball program as one of the best in Division 2. In addition, Coach has been intentional about giving back to this community and serving as a role model for servant leadership.
Coach Ramsey, along with the 2013 Ashland University National Championship Team, are now part of the 13th class of the highly acclaimed Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. Ramsey‘s induction recognized her life-long commitment to the total development of her student athletes. In addition, she was responsible for bringing Ashland University its first National Championship. “As I reflect on both my playing and coaching career, I am humbled and grateful to the Lord for blessing me with this journey”, Coach Ramsey reflected.
The inaugural class of the Women’s Impact Award, recognizes Sue Ramsey for her commitment to help women “unleash their power and realize their potential”.
Ashland University
Coach Sue Ramsey was awarded an Honorary Doctoral Degree in Law from Ashland University.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
Sue Ramsey has been named the first female to receive the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Sports Legend Award. The Ohio Sports Legend symbolizes people who have a history of giving back, of putting a high value on Christian beliefs and morals while impacting the community and places where they work and live with the Gospel.
Athletes In Action
In 2013, Sue Ramsey was inducted into Athlete’s In Actions Hall of Faith. This award honors one male and one female chosen from the world of sports for his and her faith, leadership, character and integrity on and off the field of competition.
Coach Ramsey was honored as the WBCA NCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year for the 2nd year in a row. Ramsey and the Ashland Eagles finished the 2012-13 season as National Champions with a 37-1 record.

Ashland University head women’s basketball coach Sue Ramsey has been named the Columbus Dispatch coach of the year for the second year in a row.
Miami University
Ramsey received one of the most prestigious awards a coach in the Midwest can receive. The Ashland head coach was among five coaches who were inducted into Miami University’s (Ohio) Cradle of Coaches Association on Sept. 22, 2012. The Cradle of Coaches Association was established in 1971 to acknowledge the role Miamians have played in establishing Miami University as the Cradle of Coaches. All the coaches who are in the Cradle of Coaches are Miami alumni. Ramsey is a 1978 graduate and she also coached at Miami (1983-84).
Sue Ramsey of Ashland University was named NCAA Division II national coach of the year. The 17-year head coach and her team recorded a 33-game winning streak – the longest of any athletic program in Ashland history. They finished the 2011-12 season as National Runner-up with a 33-2 record.
The coaches in the GLIAC voted Sue Ramsey to be named the conference Coach of the Year. Ramsey’s Ashland Eagles went undefeated in conference play and won the GLIAC championship becoming the first basketball team in school history to reach the achievement.
Coach Ramsey was honored as the WBCA NCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year.
Columbus Dispatch Newspaper
Ashland University head women’s basketball coach Sue Ramsey has been named the 2012-13 Columbus Dispatch coach of the year. The announcement was made in the Sunday (Apr. 21) edition of the newspaper. Ramsey received 21 first place votes and 70 total points.
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
This award was established in 2008 to honor Kay Yow, head women’s basketball coach at North Carolina State University. The purpose of the award is to recognize a women’s basketball coach who over the course of his or her career, has coached according to Biblical principles. A coach who has coached the heart of the athlete, as well as the body and mind. Coach Sue Ramsey is this year’s well deserved award winner.
Alumni Association, Ashland University
The Dr. Glenn L. Clayton Award is given each year to an individual who either is employed or is retired from Ashland College/University. The recipient must demonstrate the qualities of a committed and dedicated leader such as Dr. Clayton and should exhibit the mission of the University through their actions both inside and outside the campus environment and go above and beyond by representing the University in a positive manner in all aspects.
